Comparing GTA 6 and GTA 5: How Much Has Changed

Grand Theft Auto 5 arrived in 2013 and went on to become one of the best-selling entertainment products in history, remaining commercially relevant for well over a decade through continuous updates to its online multiplayer component. That extraordinarily long lifespan means the gap between it and its successor is unlike anything the series has experienced before, and it naturally invites comparison between what that older game accomplished and what GTA 6 appears to be aiming for based on the official material Rockstar has shared so far.

Visually, the difference is the most immediately obvious point of comparison. dewi77 was praised at launch for its ambitious rendering of Los Santos, but trailer footage for GTA 6 shows a noticeably more advanced level of environmental detail, lighting fidelity, and character animation, reflecting nearly a decade of hardware advancement and engine refinement. Structurally, the two games also appear to be taking different narrative approaches. GTA 5 famously split its story across three protagonists with loosely connected arcs and switchable perspectives, giving players variety at the cost of some emotional focus. GTA 6, by contrast, seems built around the tighter, more intimate dynamic of two central characters, suggesting Rockstar is prioritizing narrative depth over sheer scale this time around.

Setting also marks a clear departure. Los Santos was a fictionalized take on Los Angeles and Southern California more broadly, while the new game returns to a Florida-inspired backdrop reminiscent of the studio’s earlier Vice City setting, albeit rendered with far greater technical ambition and, according to widely shared speculation, a significantly larger and more varied map. Thematically, GTA 5 largely satirized the financial crisis era, celebrity culture, and government surveillance, while early impressions of GTA 6 suggest a shift toward skewering social media influence and modern online fame, updating the series’ satirical targets for a different cultural moment.

Perhaps the most significant unknown is how GTA 6 will approach the online multiplayer space that ultimately defined so much of its predecessor’s commercial success. GTA 5’s online mode grew from a modest launch feature into an enormous ongoing platform that shaped the game’s entire decade-long lifespan, and how Rockstar chooses to build on or restructure that formula for the new release remains one of the more closely watched open questions among longtime players. Whatever direction the studio takes, the sheer scope of anticipation surrounding this follow-up reflects just how much its predecessor reshaped expectations for the entire genre.
